California's Rent-Reporting Law, Explained
Civil Code §1954.07 — better known as AB 2747 — pushes rent reporting forward for California renters. Here's what it actually requires, and how RentCreditBoost™ fits in either way.
What AB 2747 Requires
Starting April 1, 2025, California landlords of larger residential properties must offer tenants the option to have their positive, on-time rent payments reported to at least one nationwide consumer credit bureau — both when a lease is signed and again each year afterward. Landlords may charge a capped fee to cover the cost of reporting, or offer it at no cost.
What It Means for Renters
If your landlord is covered by the law, you should be offered rent reporting as an opt-in — it's not automatic, and you don't have to participate. If your landlord is exempt, hasn't offered it, or only reports to one bureau, you still have options.
Where RentCreditBoost™ Fits
RentCreditBoost™ reports your on-time rent directly to TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax — no landlord sign-off required, whether or not your landlord is covered by AB 2747. It works alongside any reporting your landlord already offers, or on its own if they don't offer any.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is AB 2747?
AB 2747 is a California Law (codified as Civil Code §1954.07) that requires many residential landlords to offer tenants the option to have their on-time rent payments reported to a nationwide credit bureau, at lease signing and again annually.
Which landlords does it apply to?
The requirement generally applies to landlords of larger residential properties. Smaller landlords and certain property types may be exempt — check your lease or ask your landlord directly.
What if my landlord doesn't offer rent reporting, or I want more control?
RentCreditBoost™ reports your on-time rent directly — to all three major bureaus, with no landlord sign-off required — whether or not your landlord is covered by AB 2747.
Does this cost my landlord anything?
AB 2747 caps what a landlord can charge you for reporting, if they charge at all. RentCreditBoost™ is a separate, tenant-initiated service with its own pricing — see our Pricing page.
